Migraines are described as a condition of recurring migraine headaches. Migraines affect women more than men and are believed to be caused by the swelling of blood vessels and an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. Migraines seem to be caused by a mixture of genetics and environmental factors.

Certain environmental factors that may trigger migraines include stress, lights, loud noises, caffeine, alcohol, and odors. Before a migraine attack, some patients may see an aura, a flash of light or smell, warning them.

Symptoms (during an attack)

  • Severe head pain described as throbbing pain usually on one side of the head
  • Sensitivity to light and odor
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Lightheadedness
  • May last four to 72 hours
