Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormones are chemical messengers in the body that are responsible for many different functions. When the balance or production of hormones is upset you may be affected physically and/or psychologically. Hormones in excess can be just as harmful as not having enough of a hormone. Hormone replacement therapy is used as a complementary treatment for osteoporosis and may also be used as an aid in the treatment of depression, which can contribute to many different pain conditions. Common hormones include estrogen, progesterone, thyroid hormone, and cortisol. Estrogen is produced by the ovaries and fat cells and produces increased blood flow and oxygen metabolism. Estrogen also increases levels of neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine, which influence many emotions. Estrogen hormone replacement has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer and this risk should be discussed with your physician. Progesterone is another hormone produced by the ovaries but provides a more calming effect on the body than estrogen. Thyroid hormone replacement is common in the treatment of hypothyroidism, which influences a patient’s metabolic rates. Cortisol is important in energy metabolism as well as stress management.
